middle school

Roots Middle School program includes grades 7 and 8.   In this program level, thematic cycles are employed to guide project-based learning and to incorporate social science, physical science and literature.  Students also advance writing and math skills at a pace appropriate for their understanding and interests.  High academic expectations guide decision-making and goal-setting by students.  A focus on developing skills integral to study, research and time management help students grow as independent, self-motivated learners and goal setters.

Education of the whole child continues at this program level. Community service and leadership roles expand to explore individual student interests.  The thematic cycles are also used to help students to connect with, and find their place in the world at large. Student-led classroom meetings allow students to explore leadership, conflict-resolution, and decision making in a controlled environment that helps to develop confidence and competence.

Teachers act as instructors, guides, and mentors.  Along with parents and families, teachers are role-models of what it means, and what it looks like to be a life-long learner.  Facilitating, conferencing and questioning are the main jobs of the teacher at this level, with the student taking primary responsibility for their learning.
